NIALL MURRAY

"He was fearless and never shied away from even the most outlandish creative experiments thrown at him. A popular and talented artist. Deserves a break."

- Jamie West-Oram (The Fixx)

About Me

A man who finds music in everything.

Since the age of 13, I have been professionally performing as a guitarist in notable venues across the country (i.e. The Star Inn, Guildford; The Shed, Leicester; Concorde 2, Brighton). Forever dreaming of rock-stardom, I have always been an incredibly fun-loving, motivated and focused individual, musically directing bands from small-time gigging to festival headliners. My experience of the industry was certified when I graduated from the Academy of Contemporary Music in 2017. My undergraduate honours degree further developed my knowledge of digital marketing, tour management and professional musicianship.

Composition has always been a passion of mine, often being the primary songwriter for my band projects. Exploring compositional and arrangement techniques through an enormous range of genres and stylistic contexts has been a great interest that has influenced a lot of my work. Any style, any genre; I would jump at the chance to compose/arrange the music. Most recently, I was commissioned to compose the film score for an independent short film by Eyesight Productions, additionally, throughout my undergraduate degree I had also composed and arranged music in the style of reggae; jazz; bossa nova; retro video game; punk; 80's power ballad; gospel etc.

Alongside other work, I have also provided tuition for guitar, bass, ukulele, songwriting, music and piano theory both online and directly. This included 1-1 tuition, as well as small and large groups of students. This, as well as a year of volunteering as a performing arts technician at Robert Smyth Academy, highlighted my additional love for education and teaching. I went on to study my PGCE at the University of Brighton, teaching the UAL Levels 2 and 3 Music Performance and Production diplomas and extended diploma at Brighton MET College. My extensive knowledge and experience of the industry asserted my authority within the large FE classroom, despite my young age.

After 3 years of peripatetic instrumental teaching with Brighton & Hove Music & Arts (now 'Create Music'), I have gained another PGCE in Secondary Music Education from the University of Sussex and now teach music at a popular state secondary school in Brighton.

Previous Work

Musician

Having been a guitarist for 11 years, I have gigged in a wide range of genres and settings - from comedy bands at concerts to reggae bands in local pubs; alt. rock bands headlining UK festivals (Rock on the Rec had over 1,000 fans attending in 2012 & '13) to a Jazz/Pop function band in Sofia, Bulgaria (playing bass guitar). Most recently I have depped as a guitarist playing the Concorde 2, a 600 capacity venue in Brighton.

Composer

Besides being the primary songwriter for the majority of original bands I have worked in, I composed the music for short independent films, 'The Girl in the Cafe' and 'Obsessiveness', by Eyesight Productions. The short films were around 45 minutes long each and required me to compose and arrange a solo piano score using Sibelius 7. I have also composed and recorded the Theme Music for 'The Mundane Podcast with Chris and Dave', using Logic Pro X DAW software.

Educator

I am also a hard-working and enthusiastic music teacher. After completing my PGCE at the University of Brighton, I have gained excellent communication and organisational skills through being a confident instrumental teacher for Brighton & Hove Music & Arts. Interested in continuing my professional development, I have progressed into an ambitious and reflective practitioner whose up-to-date research intends to meet the needs of every learner. I will always be happy to help.
